Bad Road

(Written after seeing Lucinda Williams in concert for the first time. She was excellent but certainly weathered.)

Been down the road a thousand miles

And all of it been bad

Thinkin’ about your promises

Of good times we would have

And when I followed out the door

Wheels smokin’ as we went

It seems like only yesterday

Dreamed you were heaven sent

The neon lights, the starry nights

Felt freedom like the wind

Runnin’ wild, the crazy child

Livin’ on the edge of sin

Tellin’ stories, gathering crowds

I’d stand so close to you

One more round, in one more town

Just hoping that I’d do

Chorus:

Been down the road a thousand miles

And all of it been bad

Thinkin’ about your promises

Of good times we would have

Another day turns into night

Just sitting at the bar

Reflections in the mirror

Showed I wasn’t getting far

Driftin’ in from town to town

Like shadows on the prowl

Feelin’ my soul wearing out

But pushing one more hour

Hiding sunshine from my eyes

Still strung out from the night

And knowing in my fractured heart

That something wasn’t right

Chorus:

Been down the road a thousand miles

And all of it been bad

Thinkin’ about your promises

Of good times we would have

Spinnin’…dizzy… losing faith

And running out of fuel

I’d lie in bed, with pounding head

Just one more tarnished jewel

I didn’t know how fast we’d go

My dreams had turned to black

Saw bleary eyed, I’d lost my smile

And couldn’t get it back

Spirit weak and feeling cold

This bird didn’t fly no more

I finally stood up straight and tall

And headed for the door

Chorus:

Been down the road a thousand miles

And all of it been bad

Thinkin’ about your promises

Of good times we would have

And if you really loved me

Then you know that I was right

To let me travel my own road

And leave without a fight

The tracks are nearly faded now

But bleach still in my hair

The old road is a ending

And I’m riding on my spare

Spent all night in this rusted truck

Lights flashing in my eyes

And wishing, hoping, prayin’

That the past is far behind

Chorus:

Been down the road a thousand miles

And all of it been bad

Thinkin’ about your promises

Of good times we would have

And now I’m all done running

As the past and present meet

My youth is far behind me

But the future at my feet

It’s gotten so I ain’t afraid

Of lookin’ straight ahead

The sun don’t hurt my clear blue eyes

But widen them instead

A new roads out there somewhere

And I’m thinking as I drive

Ain’t no one gonna bring me down

This woman is alive

Chorus:

Been down the road a thousand miles

And all of it been bad

But seein’ that the path I took

Led me to who I am

Repeat Verse
