Daddy’s Boy

(Written after my wife was sad because of how fast our boys were growing up. Think a slow country lullaby)

Daddy’s little boy at night

Sleeping long, and sleeping right

Take a breath of fresh spring air

Breeze is rippling through your hair

Watching starlight dance on you

Feeling lucky, feeling new

Wishing this will never end

Time of wonder, heaven sent

Never thought it’d be so good

Heart so warm, love understood

Tiny fingers, cheeks aglow

Lips a’ quiver, breathin’ slow

Wonderin’ what you’re dreaming of

Hopin’ angels rise above

Like the shimmer in the sky

Believin’ God is at your side

Refrain:

Daddy’s little boy at night

Sleeping long, and sleeping right

Take a breath of fresh spring air

Breeze is rippling through your hair

When I watch you sleep at night

See a future clear and bright

Locks are curling, first tooth in

Steps are taken, words begin

Never knew how fast it’d go

Tried to live it, tried to slow

Crayon colors, scribbled name

Ridin’ bikes and baseball games

Knowin’ that we can’t go back

Life keeps movin’ down the track

Readin’ books and days in school

Makin’ friends and learning rules

Refrain:

Daddy’s little boy at night

Sleeping long, and sleeping right

Take a breath of fresh spring air

Breeze is rippling through your hair

Sun keeps risin’ in the blue

Days go by and seem so few

Sideline cheering, soccer score

Friends surround you, watch you soar

Months are blowin’ in the wind

Time is drifting, years set in

Voice is lower, eyes deep blue

Stride is longer, gaze is true

Watching from a distance now

Knowin’ that I taught you how

Borrowed car keys, dance tonight

Check the mirror, lookin’ right

Refrain:

Daddy’s little boy at night

Sleeping long, and sleeping right

Take a breath of fresh spring air

Breeze is rippling through your hair

Seems you’re growing up too fast

Can’t slow down, those days are past

Only one thing left to do

Give you wings, let you be you

See you standin’ straight and tall

Hopin’ that you’ll never fall

Proud of all that you’ve become

Time to step back, time has come

As you’re walkin’ out the door

Don’t forget who loves you more

The world’s a’callin’, future’s here

But in my heart you’re always near

Refrain:

Daddy’s little boy at night

Sleeping long, and sleeping right

Take a breath of fresh spring air

Breeze is rippling through your hair
